Agroforestry has drawn attention as a promising way to tackle deforestation, particularly in tropical regions.Shade coffee agroforestry in Central America is one such example that has been spotlighted as an ecological and socioeconomic boon for farmers. In this study we focus on the distribution of shade trees and the dynamics of coffee plantations, and explain how is incorporated into people's changing livelihoods. Interviews with households and visits to coffee fields revealed 119 different shade tree species in various combinations on 159 coffee fields held by 66 households. The diversification of tree species was a reflection of various demands for shade trees according to the preferences of individual householders based on their lifestyle, culture, and knowledge. Diversity and variability in land use was also observed. Especially plantations had flexible dynamics incorporating slash-and-burn farming. These diversities should help people in responding flexibly to changes in external political or economic factors. Maintaining a wide range of options through diversity or other means is an excellent way to ensure a robust and flexible response to external pressures.

Forest lands in Indonesia are classified as state lands and subject to management under agreements allocated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. There has been a long-standing tension between the ministry and local communities who argue that they have traditionally managed large areas of forest and should be allowed to continue to do so. A series of recent legal and administrative decisions are now paving the way for the allocation of forests to local communities. There is a hypothesis that the communities will protect the forests against industrial conversion and that they will also conserve biodiversity. This hypothesis needs to be closely examined. Conservation of biodiversity and management for local benefits are two different and potentially conflicting objectives. This paper reviews examples of forests managed by local communities in Indonesia and concludes that there is very limited information available on the conservation of natural biodiversity in these forests. I conclude that more information is needed on the status of biodiversity in community managed forests. When forests are allocated for local management, special measures need to be in place to ensure that biodiversity values are monitored and maintained.

Abstract. Iskandar J, Iskandar BS. 2017. Local knowledge of the Baduy Community of South Banten (Indonesia) on the traditional landscapes. Biodiversitas 18: 928-938. The Baduy people are a distinctive group of 11,620 people representing 3,395 households who live in an area of 5.136,58 hectares in the mountainous region of South Banten, Java. Traditional Baduy land cultivated by Baduy alone is described as tanah Baduy (Baduy land). This paper discusses the local knowledge of the Baduy community on the traditional landscapes. A qualitative method was used in this study. The result of the study shows that based on the Baduy categories, the Baduy landscape can be divided into four types, mainly forest, swiddens, gardens, and settlements. These landscape types have been traditionally managed based on the Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and beliefs. As a result, the Baduy people have continuously been able to practice traditional swidden cultivation, despite population growth and the depletion of the forest around them.
