Indices of Oxidative Stress in Eutopic and Ectopic Endometria of Women with Endometriosis

Abstract: This study was designed to determine the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase and some of the lipid peroxidation indices (malondialdehyde and total sulfhydryl groups) in eutopic and ectopic endometria of patients with endometriosis. Ectopic endometrial tissues (ovarian cysts; n = 22) were obtained laparoscopically during the preovulatory period. Statistical analyses were made using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The levels of malondialdehyde and total sulfhydryl groups were similar in … Show more

“…OS damages observed in endometriosis cells are localized in the proliferation process [126]. Superoxide dismutase activity is higher in endometriosis cells compared to healthy cells [127]. In endometriosis cells, OS can enhance the proliferation process [43] through the activation of MAPK/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which acts on the proliferation and survival cell process.…”

“…A positive correlation between concentrations of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in the peritoneal fluid and endometriosis has been reported [75]. Cytokines released by the macrophages influence the redox status of the ectopic endometrium in patients with endometriosis [81]. Superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase activity and lipid peroxidation levels were measured in ectopic endometrial tissue obtained from ovarian endometriomas.…”

“…In this study, we investigated the effectivity of alpha-lipoic acid in the treatment of endometriosis, which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drug that has never been experimented in the treatment of endometriosis. In previous studies, increased oxidative stress parameters have been found both in ectopic endometrial tissues and in peripheral blood samples in endometriosis [26][27][28]. Oxidative stress is one of the factors in the pathophysiology of endometriosis.…”
