Indices for assessing the prediction bounds of hydrological models and application by generalised likelihood uncertainty estimation / Indices pour évaluer les bornes de prévision de modèles hydrologiques et mise en œuvre pour une estimation d'incertitude par vraisemblance généralisée

Abstract: To reflect the uncertainties of a hydrological model in simulating and forecasting observed discharges according to rainfall inputs, the estimated result for each time step should not be just a point estimate (a single numerical value), but should be expressed as a prediction interval, i.e. a band defined by the prediction bounds of a particular confidence level α. How best to assess the quality of the prediction bounds thus becomes very important for understanding the modelling uncertainty in a comprehensive … Show more

“…Furthermore, two other probabilistic performance measurements proposed by Xiong et al [71] were adopted for quantitative evaluation of the BMA probabilistic results. The containing ratio (CR) is defined as the percentage of the observed data which falls within the 95% confidence interval, and the average bandwidth (B) is the average width of the corresponding bound.…”

“…In order to quantitatively assess the model performance, first, the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), correlation coefficient (r) and relative Bias (%) were applied as indicators to judge the point-based performance accuracy in model calibration [42]; second, Containing ratio (CR), Average band (B) and Average deviation amplitude (D) were induced in to diagnose the band-based uncertainty performance of 95% confidence intervals (95CI) in the ensemble outputs [43]. High-quality performance of modeling is characterized by high values of NSE (≤ 1), r (≤ 1), and CR (≤ 100%), as well as low B (≥ 0) and D (≥ 0).…”
