Índices de infestación aedica e identificación de conocimientos, actitudes y práctica sobre dengue en llanterías del Departamento del Atlántico, Colombia

Abstract: Objective To identify the awareness, attitudes and practices related to dengue in owners and workers of tire ships, as well as the levels of mosquito infestation in tire shops in Atlántico department - Colombia. Methods We conducted a descriptive study. The variables were described as percentages and measures of central tendency and dispersion. “…If lower tanks were washed once per week and garbage was disposed of properly, this could ideally control more than 80% of the breeding sites in these neighborhoods. These results are similar to other studies performed in Colombia, where the knowledge of disease transmission and control is considerably good, but attitudes and practices are deficient and the larval index is high [18].…”

“…The high level of knowledge of symptoms can be associated with the fact that one of every three students believes to have suffered from Zika at the time of the survey (not confirmed cases). These results contrast with those presented by in regards to Dengue 30 , in which, unlike our study, the population had a low educational level but a high level of knowledge on the disease and the vector, as a result of educational and prevention campaigns offered by the national and regional authorities. This can be associated with the Dengue campaigns authorities have been developing and implementing for more than four decades, and the fact that the studies can coincide with recent campaigns that aim to control the vector.…”

“…The survey was made using other studies as a reference, which have analyzed the level of knowledge, perceptions and practices regarding vector-borne diseases (VBD), such as Dengue and Malaria 30,[40][41][42] , since, at the time of the study, there were no works that assessed the level of knowledge in regards to Zika.…”

“…The prevention and control activities of these three Aedes-borne arboviruses in Colombia have focused mainly on their principal vector, Ae. aegypti, through educational campaigns aimed at the community for the elimination of breeding sites, the application of biological and chemical insecticides, and the use of growth [7,8]. The constant selection pressure arising from the heavy use of pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticides has generated resistant populations of Ae.…”
