Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its spread prevention actions (SPAs) have affected a large number of human activities globally in 2020-2021. Temporary lockdowns, stay-at-home policies, movement restrictions, and personal health care actions have relatively changed the daily life routine in urban areas which can eventually affect the characteristics of municipal wastewater (MW). This study evaluates the performance of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) during COVID-19 pandemic and related SPAs. This evaluation also considers MW variations in quality and quantity and compares the performance of WWTPs (2020) with earlier data (2015–2019). For this purpose, 23 WWTPs located in Isfahan province, Iran, were chosen as the study area and classified based on their locations, biological treatment unit, and capacities. Results indicate that the inflow of WWTPs increased 20 % on average during SPAs, while the concentrations of COD and BOD in MW decreased 23 and 16 %, respectively. Nevertheless, the performance of WWTPs remained rather constant. It is concluded that increasing the dilute domestic proportion of MW, particularly in smaller communities, as a matter of COVID-19 SPAs could not impose adverse impacts on wastewater treatment operations and pollution removal. Different types of secondary treatment units, such as activated sludge, stabilization pond, and aerated lagoon showed stable performances. However, disinfection was enhanced in WWTPs in order to reduce the probability of viral transmission via wastewater for reuse. This study also recommends that the characteristics of MW, and not treated wastewater, can be used as an indicator for coordinating SPAs in similar epidemics. This notification can be helpful for the management of WWTPs and risk control in urban areas.

Need of self-sustaining wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has become critical to cope up with dynamics of the environmental regulations and rapid advancements in the contemporary technologies. At present there are limited number of self-sustaining WWTPs around the world. The aim of this chapter is to present state -of- art of Downflow Hanging Sponge (DHS) system which was developed as a post treatment unit of Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) from sustainability perspective. DHS system is a non-submerged fixed bed trickling filter (TF) that employs a core technology of polyurethane sponges as a media where the microorganisms thrive and major treatment processes take place. This chapter reviews the introduction of DHS system (UASB+DHS) summarizes the quantitative analysis of environmental, economic and social sustainability using indicators. Furthermore, self-sustaining prospects of DHS system are assessed and discussed by comparing with conventional TF (UASB+TF).

Wastewaters from various process industries, namely food and agricultural, sugar mill, brewery, milk, vegetable and fruit, and meat and fisheries processing industries and their wastewater effluents contain nutrients, organic matter, inorganic, heavy metals, suspended solids, and pathogens. The discharges of non-treated wastewater enter the nearby aquatic ecosystem (e.g., lakes, rivers) and are a significant concern due to the presence of different nutrients, competing ions and C containing pollutants. It causes excessive growth of algae, loss of habitat/species, and other negative impacts on human health/environment. In the present review, different treatment approaches have been discussed in utilizing these nutrients to synthesize value-added products such as biopolymer, biofuel, pigment, organic acid, or enzymes. These biopolymers can be used to prepare various food products/packaging materials. Dextran, chitosan, carrageenan, alginate, and pectin are good examples of non-food biopolymers. Besides these products, poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthesis from wastewater nutrients is reported as a new source of bio-nanocomposite materials/biopolymer-based coatings. In this review, the different treatment approaches are discussed, which are being used worldwide for the removal/recovery of nutrients, toxic pollutants, and the potential resource recovery of value-added products from wastewater.
