Indication of current-injection lasing from an organic semiconductor

Abstract: In this study, we investigate the lasing properties of 4,4′-bis[(N-carbazole)styryl]biphenyl thin films under electrical pumping. The electroluminescent devices incorporate a mixed-order distributed feedback SiO2 grating into an organic light-emitting diode structure and emit blue lasing. The results provide an indication of lasing by direct injection of current into an organic thin film through selection of a high-gain organic semiconductor showing clear separation of the lasing wavelength from significant tr… Show more

“…In this work we design multilayer photonic crystals and microcavities including two photochromic molecules reported in Refs. [15,16] and 4,4'-bis[(N-carbazole)styryl]biphenyl (BSB-Cz) [17] one of the most promising optical gain molecules. We study the optical properties of the three molecules with density functional theory.…”

“…However, in many cases, the lower luminance of OLEDs relative to, e.g., inorganic GaN LEDs represents a challenge, in particular as the driving voltage available from CMOS chips is limited (often to 5 V) . Applications that would benefit from OLEDs with increased luminance include visible‐light communication, lasers, or biomedical uses, e.g., in cancer treatment through photodynamic therapy, sensors, imaging, and most recently optogenetics, which is an emerging neuroscience technology that allows optical activation and silencing of genetically modified nerve cells with great specificity . In many of these areas, the desired luminance is orders of magnitude higher than for displays and even general illumination.…”
