An Open Access International Peer Reviewed QuarterlyIndia is a global player in edible oil arena, being the 2nd largest importer, and 3rd largest consumer of edible oil as well as 4th largest oilseed producer. Rapeseed and mustard, Soybean and groundnut contribute 82% of total inland oilseed production. Per capita consumption has been increasing and is projected at around 24 kg by 2025. There is a large gap in production and demand of edible oilseeds, leading to growing dependency on import day by day. Productivity of Indian oil seed sector per se is very low that needs to be augmented to save the hard earned foreign exchange. This situation needs revisiting researchable and policy issues adopted so far. This article discusses the current scenario and future strategies to achieve self-sufficiency in Indian oilseed sector.

Field experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of phosphorus (P) and BM on growth, biomass and harvest index in irrigated and dryland wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Siren-2010) under calcareous soils in Northwestern Pakistan. The experiment was conducted under full and limited or dryland irrigated conditions at the Research farm of The University of Agriculture Peshawar during winter. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design. The results revealed that growth, biomass and harvest index was significantly higher for full than limited condition and for treated plots (rest) than control. The interaction of BM x P x IC revealed 1 1 that under full irrigated condition the increase in both P and BM levels (90 kg P ha-and 30 L ha-, respectively) and under limited irrigated condition the intermediate levels of both P and BM (60 kg 1 1 P ha-and 20 L ha-, respectively) increased growth, biomass and harvest index in wheat under calcareous soils in semiarid condition.

Wheat is an important cool season cereal crop of India, production and quality get compromised due to biotic and abiotic stresses. Wheat is susceptible to a variety of diseases and insect pests, including birds. Birds attack on standing crop are not very often and extent and pattern of damage varies considerably, however, its management practices is generally not taken in to account. The bird preferred to attack wheat crops while they were in the reproductive stage, especially during milking to dough stage. The data collected over the course of a two-year field study in the Kashmir valley at Research Farm Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) has been subjected to Random Forest model to determine whether there is a trait-specific specific preference for attack if any. Random forest (RF) model identified five major features out of 13 selected features of wheat germplasm with seventy percent accuracy for parrot birds’ preferred to attack on wheat germplasm. RF Model suggests that taller height, having long spikes and a greater number of ears, along with more biomass and grain yields, could be possible traits that bird pest target during the reproductive stage. It was inferenced that the average performance of the random forest model demonstrated with model accuracy (71%), sensitivity (0.77), kappa 0.41 and receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC-0.74) and showed good fit for classification of parrot attack on wheat germplasm.
