Indexing seasonal abundance of humpback whales around Abrolhos Archipelago, Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: The waters surrounding Abrolhos Archipelago, Brazil, serve as one of several winter grounds for southern-hemisphere humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). Development of tourism in this region has caused concern over disturbance effects to breeding and nursing whales. To document the chronology of humpback abundance around Abrolhos, three years of visualscan data obtained during July through November 1998-2000 were analyzed. During 1-hour scans, observers visually tracked all groups within 9.3km and nearly … Show more

“…These variables correspond to the behaviour of cetaceans commonly tested to assess the short-term impact of whale-watching activities (Williams et al 2002, Bejder & Samuels 2003, Scheidat et al 2004, Morete et al 2007, Stamation et al 2010) and can be recorded from a shore-based station for humpback whale research.…”

“…An acoustic 'null' may be produced in front of the ship wherein whales may have difficulty in ascertaining the ship's approach angle (Terhune & Verboom 1999, Allen et al 2012. Whales may also be engaged in surface activities, making them less responsive to approaching ships (Morete et al 2007, Nowacek et al 2007. Recent data on tagged blue whales in proximity of large ships off coastal California demonstrate that whales have limited response behaviors in reaction to ships (McKenna et al 2015).…”
