“…Indeed the concept of nutritive and non‐nutritive flow appears to date from the work of Pappenheimer (1941) who noted that oxygen consumption by the constant pressure perfused dog gastrocnemius muscle was differently controlled by infused adrenaline (stimulatory) or stimulation of vasoconstrictor nerves (inhibitory).
