& Methods Data from 418 sample plots were used to adjust generic models for forest types and specific models for 15 species. Regression assumptions, modelling efficiency, lack of fitness, goodness of fit and comparison between species-specific and generic models were assessed by analytical methods. & Results Logarithmic models presented the best results of adjustment and evenness of residual variance. Lack of fit F test showed acceptable adjust quality for nearly all speciesspecific and generic models; R 2 adj * and modelling efficiency measure presented values close to 1 for all fitted models; model identity F test showed differences between specific and generic models in some cases. & Conclusion Since regression assumptions were satisfied and because of their quality of fit, the fitted models compose useful tools for predicting total stem volume (with bark) for forest remnants in southern Brazil. Stratification of datasets by forest type for model fitting showed to be necessary, but, commonly, generic models for forest types produced estimates not less reliable than species-specific models.

Objetivou-se, no presente trabalho, avaliar modelos para estimar a produção de sortimentos de plantios clonais do híbrido Eucalyptus camaldulensis x Eucalyptus urophylla com espaçamento 3 x 3 m, localizados em Paraopeba, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Para estimar a produção em área basal e volume dos sortimentos de povoamentos, foram utilizados dados parcelas permanentes. Para estimar o volume dos sortimentos, foram analisados o modelo logístico com adição de covariáveis e o modelo de Clutter. Para a seleção do modelo mais preciso, foram utilizadas as estatísticas erro padrão relativo [Syx (%)], viés (V), média das diferenças (MD), desvio padrão das diferenças (DPD) e análise gráfica dos resíduos. De acordo com as análises, o modelo Logístico obteve o melhorresultado para estimar a produção em volume de madeira para energia e celulose. A metodologia de estimação da produção de sortimentos de plantações florestais analisada foi de fácil aplicação e precisa.

Competition Indexes to Evaluate Tree Growth in a Semi-Deciduous Seasonal Forest

Most of the studies that analyze the behavior of tree competition approach even-aged plantations. Therefore, it is possible to notice a lack of this kind of information regarding natural forests with high biodiversity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the competition in a fragment of Semi-Deciduous Seasonal Forest, according to the ecologic group, light depending and non-depending groups for all species sampled in the fragment. The Distance Independent Competition Index and Semi-Distance Independent Competition Index were applied in this study. The basal area in larger trees index, without the radius of influence, was the most efficient to analyze how the competition affects the growth of the specimens in the studied fragment. It was stated that evaluating the competition per ecologic group is more efficient. The results confirm that the forest competition cannot be determined by considering only a fixed radius of influence that embraces the neighbors and the subject tree.
