Incremental validity of positive and negative valence in predicting personality disorder.

Abstract: The Big Seven model of personality includes five dimensions similar to the Big Five model as well as two evaluative dimensions—Positive Valence (PV) and Negative Valence (NV)—which reflect extremely positive and negative person descriptors, respectively. Recent theory and research have suggested that PV and NV predict significant variance in personality disorder (PD) above that predicted by the Big Five, but firm conclusions have not been possible because previous studies have been limited to only single measu… Show more

“…Neither does the Big Six mix angry hostility with other negative emotions, instead placing this content distinctly in the domain of low Agreeableness. Furthermore, positive and negative valence content (to some extent included in the honesty/propriety dimension of Big Six inventories) has been shown to incrementally increase prediction of personality disorders, beyond the Big Five (Simms et al, 2010).…”

“…Positive Valence and Negative Valence reflect maladaptive self‐evaluative processes and are therefore implicated in narcissism, borderline personality, and avoidant personality (Benet‐Martinez & Waller, ). Positive Valence is anchored by terms such as excellent and outstanding versus ordinary, which could suggest a grandiose sense of self (Hough & Ones, ), potentially indicating narcissistic and histrionic PDs (Simms, Yufik, & Gros, ). Negative Valence is anchored by terms such as bad and evil versus decent, suggesting a desire to display a wicked self‐image (Hough & Ones, ): the DSM‐IV (APA, ) indicates that individuals suffering Borderline PD “usually have a self‐image that is based on being bad or evil” (p. 707).…”

Negative Valence non‐specifically predicts most PDs (Durrett & Trull, ; Simms, Yufik & Gros, ). Negative Valence is likely a generalized dark side trait, such as Honesty/Humility above, but Positive Valence's role in dark personality is less obviously clear.…”
