Increasing Treatment Acceptability Through Video

Abstract: The effects of a video vignette on the treatment acceptability ratings of four behavioral interventions were evaluated. Two interventions involved positive reinforcement (DRO and DRI) and two negative consequences (contingent physical restraint and contingent electric shock). Seventy‐four undergraduate psychology students were randomly assigned into two groups. The experimental group (n=36) viewed a video vignette of a self‐abusive individual whereas the control group (n=38) did not. Acceptability ratings prio… Show more

“…Unless a client has an understanding of what a proposed treatment includes, s/he may not consider the intervention acceptable. Thus, TA can be increased with consumer education (Foxx, Shultz, Valdez, & Johndrow, 1996;Jensen, 1997;Jensen, Kennerley, LeJeune-Hall, & Bacon, 1992;Kazdin, 1980a;Mudford, 1987;Singh & Katz, 1985;Tingstrom, 1989). For example, Singh and Katz (1985) asked undergraduate students to rate the acceptabilities of four alternative child treatments (differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior, positive practice, time out, and humanistic parenting).…”
