Increasing robustness of LSB audio steganography using a novel embedding method

Abstract: In this paper, we present a novel high bit rate LSB audio watermarking method that reduces embedding distortion of the host audio. Using the proposed two-step algorithm, watermark bits are embedded into higher LSB layers, resulting in increased robustness against noise addition. In addition, listening tests showed that perceptual quality of watermarked audio is higher in the case of the proposed method than in the standard LSB method.

“…This method profits from the inability of person to visually differentiate colour shades that differ only in one unit so that the last bit of colour code is used to hide information. This method can be applied in raster monochromatic images as well as in the colourful images, where all image colour channels of RGB format are used [4][6]. …”

“…The point of this work is to give a brief overview of methods of hiding the existence of messages, to point out the advantages and disadvantages of steganographic algorithms, and to introduce the suggested algorithm of steganography which makes use of a particular method of steganography, using the least significant bits (LSB) of hiding media [3] [4].…”

“…It is based on embedding the bits of message in the least significant bit of the host which cause less effect in the host signal value and less error compared with the original signal. It allow large amount of data to be concealed within an audio file, [11] and usually not creates audible changes to the host but low robustness against attacks and signal processing modification. Fig 2, illustrates the LSB technique and how you can embed 'hi' message in the audio samples using this technique, [1].…”

“…We can increase the depth of the embedding layer from 4th to 6th and to 8 th LSB layers without disturbing the perceptual transparency of the stego audio signal, to improve the robustness of LSB technique against distortion and noise addition, [17] [19].Only bits at the sixth place of each 16 bits sample of the original signal are substituted with bits from the data [17] [18]. To reduce the embedding error, the other bits can be flipped in order to have a new sample that is nearer to the original one.…”
