Increasing motivation and engagement in neurosurgery for medical students through practical simulation-based learning

Abstract: BackgroundSimulation-based learning (SBL) is an essential adjunct to modern surgical education. Our study aimed to evaluate the educational benefit and motivational impact of a pilot practical neurosurgical module.Materials and methods38 clinical medical students from several EU Medical Schools attended an international surgical course focused on teaching and learning basic surgical skills. We designed a pilot neurosurgical workshop instructing students to insert an intracranial pressure bolt using an ex vivo … Show more

“…This was done with the aim of developing an interest among medical students in neurosurgery. A Codman hand drill, an intracranial pressure monitor and a transducer were the instruments used on the cadaveric specimen, and the training was accompanied by lectures related to the pathophysiology of raised pressure in the cranium [51].…”

“…15 This primarily involves a multi-modality evidence synthesis which includes a series of narrative 16 and systematic reviews 17 focused on SBL for undergraduates (eviCORE [18][19][20][21], with focused original studies on in vivo SBL for undergraduates. [22][23][24][25][26][27][28] This work has been part of a dedicated research network. 29 -Regarding assessment methods, we performed a subgroup adaptation and appraisal of a systematic review published on postgraduates' assessment tools, which summarises the current published evidence on assessment approaches.…”

“…13,14 Manual search in the references of the included articles yielded another 2 original studies using in vivo SBL, which derive from the authors' previous work. 23,24 Following the "FOOVEL" approach, we completed the essential core of evidence needed to draw conclusions as part of this article. This includes in total 25 citations.…”

“…However, what is often underestimated is the importance of motivation in medical education. We found only 3 relevant studies devoted to this topic [19][20][21] and it is one of the reasons why we decided to perform this audit.…”
