Increasing information-seeking behavior with a model-reinforced videotape.

Abstract: The effects of a model-reinforced videotape in increasing vocational information-seeking behavior were studied in an outreach, self-instructionoriented career information resource center for college students. Fortytwo students were randomly selected for one of three treatments in a posttest-only design. Results showed increased type and frequency of information-seeking behavior for students viewing the model videotape in comparison to other students using the program. Differential effects of the treatment cate… Show more

“…Although most scholars and practitioners in career development would agree that career exploration is a useful activity, research has indicated that there is much individual variation in the degree to which one explores (Jepsen, 1984). In attempting to identify those factors that are thought to foster exploratory activity, much of the research has employed a social learning perspective (e.g., Fisher, Reardon, & Burck, 1976;Krumboltz & Thoresen, 1964). From this perspective, the primary intervention strategies that have emerged have relied on modeling and learning theory (e.g., A k e n & Johnston, 1973).…”

“…Many development interventions for information seeking are similarly focused on specific skills, such as effective use of library resources. For example, Fisher, Reardon, and Burck (1976) used behavior modeling techniques in a brief videotape to teach students how to find information in a university career center. The researchers found that students who watched the video engaged in more frequent and more varied information-seeking behavior within the center than did students who completed a paper instructional module.…”

“…On a more encouraging note, it appears that all the dimensions that we considered have been developed to some extent by some means, suggesting that none are completely fixed. Further, DAC-like elements such as role-play-INVESTIGATION OF DEVELOPABLE DIMENSIONS ing, practice, and feedback appear to be effective strategies for developing several dimensions-for example, teamwork (Salas et al, 1999) and information seeking (Fisher et al, 1976).…”
