Increasing energy efficiency in passenger ships by novel energy conservation measures

Abstract: To achieve increasing emission requirements, the cruise ship industry is working to develop higher efficiency ships. Cruise ships are different from other ship types in their relatively higher consumption of electrical power, steam and hot water. Several novel high-efficiency system concepts are possible for on-board electrical power generation and other utility services, each with differing impacts and first costs. Low-emission concepts novel to the cruise ship industry include combinations of exhaust gas hea… Show more

“…It is known that modernization requires significant investment, while the ship owner's funds are often limited. Unlike previously considered studies on the fleet modernization [5,[8][9][10][11][12], the proposed strategy makes it possible not only to comprehensively improve the technical characteristics of a vessel but also to ensure the profit gain as a result of their implementation, thereby ensuring the modernization effectiveness.…”

“…Paper [12] examines alternative concepts for improving the energy efficiency of cruise vessels by modeling the operation of vessels equipped with different new energy generation systems. The study revealed that double-pressure steam systems, the use of low-temperature water have the greatest potential to ensure the reduction of fuel consumption and to improve the energy efficiency of cruise vessels.…”

“…The typical configuration for a fully electric cruise ship, with size 140,000 GT similar to the one investigated herein, is depicted in Figure 1. Cruise ships of that size account for a considerable part of the overall tonnage of the cruise ship fleet and are identified as representatives high-efficiency conventional cruise ships [34].…”

“…Because of these reasons, two strategies such as finding the renewable energy sources [3] and technical solutions for emission management for the improvement of the effectiveness in the use of energy and the environmental protection are essential [4]. Among emissions emitted into the air from the fossil fuel combustion of diesel engines, sulfur emission (SOx) is a dangerous pollutant and it is complicated to control [5], [6]. In the exhaust line of engines, SOx reacts to water under the appropriate conditions to form sulphuric acid, resulting in negative impacts on materials (corrosion) and environment (acid rain).…”
