“…At Fongoli, Senegal, it is likely that chimpanzees have never had access to red colobus monkeys at this hot, dry and open site, although the range of red colobus monkeys (P.b. temminckii) in Senegal and adjacent countries in West Africa has diminished 3 . Fongoli chimpanzees are currently not sympatric with red colobus, although they eat vertebrate prey of various types, including a number of primate species.…”

“…Fifty percent ( N = 37) of the studies from southern Senegal came from the long-term research site of Fongoli ( McGrew, Pruetz & Fulton, 2005 ; Pruetz, 2006 ; Pruetz, 2007 ; Pruetz et al, 2015 ). The remaining studies mostly fell within the Niokolo-Koba NP ( Galat et al, 2000 ; Galat, Galat-Luong & Nizinski, 2009 ), particularly Mt. Assirik ( McGrew, Baldwin & Tutin, 1981 ; McGrew, Baldwin & Tutin, 1988 ; Baldwin, McGrew & Tutin, 1982 ; Harrison, 1983 ; Pruetz et al, 2012 ).…”

“…In Senegal red colobus were recorded along the Koulountou and Gambia Rivers, and one group was observed within the town of Kolda ( Galat, Galat-Luong & Nizinski, 2009 ). In Boké (Guinea), the species was only recorded in Badiar NP, along the Senegalese border, the N’Dama forest and Sangarédi ( Bailo, Alphonse & Gu, 2009 ; Galat, Galat-Luong & Nizinski, 2009 ; WCF, 2015b ). Red colobus were reported across southern Guinea-Bissau, with more recent studies coming from Cantanhez NP.…”

“…(2) High insectivory may be because of low diversity and abundance of appropriate vertebrate prey at Fongoli (Bogart,2009), and the abundance of termites here provides an opportunity for the chimpanzees to obtain necessary protein, nutrients, and amino acids (McGrew,1983; Pruetz and Bertolani,2007; Bogart and Pruetz,2008). A typical prey species for chimpanzees, the red colobus monkey ( Piliocolobus badius ) (Boesch,1994), is not found in the hot, dry environment at Fongoli (Galat et al,2009). The most common vertebrate prey is the bushbaby (Pruetz, unpublished data), but galago density (0.59/ha) is well below that of termite mounds (Bogart,2009).…”
