Increasing awareness of climate change with immersive virtual reality

Abstract: Previous research has shown that immersive virtual reality (VR) is a suitable tool for visualizing the consequences of climate change. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether visualization in VR has a stronger influence on climate change awareness and environmental attitudes compared to traditional media. Furthermore, it was examined how realistic a VR experience has to be in order to have an effect. The VR experience consisted of a model of the Aletsch glacier (Switzerland) melting over the co… Show more

“…Climate change VR videos offer a realistic and interactive environment, allowing students to experience the consequences of climate change firsthand, as the experience of previous studies (Queiroz et al, 2023). This immersive experience triggers students' curiosity and prompts them to identify problems and potential solutions (Thoma et al, 2023). By presenting complex issues in a tangible and engaging manner, students are encouraged to think critically about the causes and implications of climate change, leading them to analyze various perspectives and formulate informed opinions.…”

“…Across these examples, there is a challenge in determining impactful differences between the more educational directed exhibitions and artist-led and futuristic ones. At the broadest level, current research suggests that exposure to VR environments may increase environmental awareness independently of design choices, suggesting that conceptual and less cutting-edge VR environment designs may be sufficient to increase pro-environmental attitudes (Thoma et al 2023).…”

“…VR also has the potential to increase awareness of important global issues, attract new students, and strengthen universities' competitive advantage. For example, educators already started to discuss the potential of VR to increase awareness of climate change (Fauville et al, 2020;Markowitz et al, 2018;Thoma et al, 2023), environmental conservation (Hsu et al, 2018;Nelson et al, 2020), diversity and inclusion (Gallardo-Williams & Dunnagan, 2021;Georgiadou, 2021;Hayes &Johnson, 2019), andpoverty andhunger (e.g., Dal Monte, 2022). By embracing the latest teaching technologies to address these global challenges, universities can add value to their degree programs and stay relevant in the 21st century.…”
