Increasing and decreasing trends of the atmospheric deposition of organochlorine compounds in European remote areas during the last decade

Abstract: Abstract. Bulk atmospheric deposition samples were collected between 2004 and 2007 at four high-altitude European sites encompassing east (Skalnaté Pleso), west (Lochnagar), central (Gossenköllesee) and south (Redòn) regions, and analysed for legacy and current-use organochlorine compounds (OCs). Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) generally showed the highest deposition fluxes in the four sites, between 112 and 488 ng m −2 mo −1 , and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) the lowest, a few ng m −2 mo −1 . Among pesticides, endosulf… Show more

“…As confirmed by many researches, the high mountain regions are especially susceptible to the deposition of many industrial and agricultural pollutants undergoing atmospheric transport, through a process called orographic cold trapping (Hageman et al 2015;Arellano et al 2015). The influence of long-range transport of air pollutants on O 3 concentration in the High Tatra Mts.…”

“…Reservoir transitioned from the top sediment layer in winter to the water-sediment interface in spring and then to the overlying water above sediment in summer, leading to the theory that weaker methylation in sediment was caused by excessive sulfide (∼15-20 μM) that reduced the mercury bioavailability. Daye et al (2015) (Arellano et al, 2015).…”

“…There are some studies carried out in quantifying bulk atmospheric deposition of PAHs, PCBs and OCPs experimentally in Europe (e.g. Arellano et al 2015; Brorström-Lundén et al 1994; Carrera et al 2002; Jakobi et al 2015), while additional data are available for other regions, for example the USA (Schifman and Boving 2015), China (Feng et al 2017) and the global oceans (González-Gaya et al 2016). Moreover, additional data for wet deposition and washout ratios are available for Europe (Shahpoury et al 2015; Škrdlíková et al 2011).…”
