Increased Transmission of Vertical Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)‐Infected Infants of HIV‐ and HCV‐Coinfected Women

Abstract: The transmission of perinatal hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection was studied retrospectively in 62 infants born to 54 HCV- and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-coinfected women enrolled in a prospective natural history study of HIV transmission. Infant HCV infection was assessed by nested RNA polymerase chain reaction. The overall rate of vertical HCV transmission was 16.4% (9/62). Most HCV-infected children did not develop antibodies to HCV. The rate of HCV infection was higher among HIV-infected infants (40… Show more

“…However, in the few infants who underwent liver biopsy, most had evidence of chronic hepatitis. 23,[25][26][27]36,46,66,67 The progression of liver disease for these children remains to be assessed. Fibrosis has been documented, even in asymptomatic infants.…”

“…Coinfection with HIV-1 worsens the prognosis of HCV disease (23,27), while HCV-associated liver disease is a common cause of HIV-associated morbidity and mortality (19,28). HCV exists in its host as a collection of variants termed quasispecies (18), whose evolution correlates with viral persistence (6,7,16,34), long-term outcome of HCV disease (13), and response to interferon treatment (9,24).…”
