Increased susceptibility toHelicobacter pylori infection in pregnancy

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori plays a major role in abdominal symptoms and gastroduodenal pathology, including gastric cancer. Pregnancy has been associated with changes in both humoral and cell-mediated immunity. These changes include alterations in the various classes of antibodies during different gestational periods. It has been previously suggested that these alterations may expose pregnant women to an increased risk of infection with this microorganism. METHODS: To further investigate this hypothesis, w… Show more

“…Infection with H. pylori in pregnancy may occur due to steroid-hormone induced changes in gastric pH [65] and/or increased susceptibility due to changes in humoral and cell-mediated immunity [66]. However, there is no clear evidence that pregnancy predisposes to de novo H. pylori infection.…”

“…13 Furthermore, an increased susceptibility to H. pylori , a potential protective factor in oesophageal adenocarcinoma development, 14 during pregnancy has been documented. 15 A Swedish case-control study reported no evidence of an association of parity with oesophageal adenocarcinoma. 16 However, a dose-dependent association between duration of breastfeeding and risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma has been reported in a case-control study from the UK.…”

“…The Helicobacter pylori infection rate is significantly higher in pregnant women than in non-pregnant women (26.6% versus 11%) 7. Furthermore, the secretion of gastric acid decreases during pregnancy, while the production of gastric mucus increases.…”
