Increased risk of Parkinson’s disease among patients with age-related macular degeneration

Abstract: Background This study aimed to investigate the risk of Parkinson’s disease (PD) among patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its association with confounding comorbidities. Methods A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted using Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000 (LHID2000). We established AMD and non-AMD cohorts from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2012 to determine the diagnosis of PD. A total of 20,84… Show more

“…Dry-type AMD patients were not included in these 3 studies and also AMD was not classi ed as early and late. In the retrospective cohort study of Chen et al, AMD patients were divided into 3 groups as neovascular, non-neovascular and unspeci ed [17]. During the analysis of AMD subtypes, there was no signi cant difference in the risk of PD.…”

“…A number of several molecular studies suggested that oxidative stress, chronic in ammation, impairment of the processing and degradation of dysfunctional cellular components, and alterations of neuronal homeostasis are common biological pathways of PD [14][15]. An increased risk of PD in neovascular type AMD patients has been shown in several studies [16][17][18]. Pathomechanisms that contribute to AMD may be associated with the development of Parkinson's disease because both seem to share similar pathogenesis pathways and common risk factors.…”

“…On the other hand, the pathogenesis of PD also shares several similarities with AMD. For both diseases, an increased incidence in elderly people, inflammatory processes and oxidative stress seem to play a major role ( Chen et al, 2021 ). In a study that was conducted by Choi et al, the association of AMD with AD and PD was investigated.…”

“…As such, some patients with unstable fixation or with neurological disorder cannot complete the whole microperimetric examination. This is for this reason that some studies excluded patients with cognitive deficit (Forshaw et al, 2021), as in addition to compliance, it is still debated in the literature how certain neurological disorder can affect the macula or are associated with an increased risk of AMD (Chen et al, 2021; Choi et al, 2020; Keenan et al, 2014; Wen et al, 2021).…”
