Increased production of nanofibrous materials by electroblowing from blends of hyaluronic acid and polyethylene oxide

Abstract: Natural and synthetic nanostructured polymers in the form of fibers are used in medical and cosmetic applications. One of the main advantages of the electrospinning method is its flexibility, which allows to use airflow in the vicinity of a spinneret to increase production. The acceleration of solvent evaporation rate allows the solution feed rate to be increased. Experimental results confirmed a significant increase in the production of hyaluronic acid and poly(ethylene) oxide nanofibers. The increase occurs … Show more

“…18,19 The electroblowing synthesis enhances the production rate of bers compared to electrospinning since additional gas ow induces faster evaporation of solvents that enables greater solution feeding rates. 20 The production rate of bers can be further increased by adding needles to the synthesis unit. Nanobers in general show some excellent properties such as high specic surface area and good mechanical strength, and handling of woven ber mats is simple compared to small particles.…”

“…However, no notable increase in productivity has been reported using multiple needles, and presumably it is the reason why these methods did not spread in practical usage. Much higher production rates can be achieved with electroblowing (Figure e) when an additional air flow facilitates the solvent evaporation (Armantrout, Bryner, & Spiers, ; Balogh et al, ; Kakoria & Sinha‐Ray, ; Medeiros, Glenn, Klamczynski, Orts, & Mattoso, ; Pokorny, Rassushin, Wolfova, & Velebny, ; Sóti et al, ). Although the feeding rate is increased during the electroblowing process, beads or droplets can also appear among the fibers more frequently due to the effects of the air flow.…”

“…The apparatus of gas jet electrospinning is demonstrated in Figure e. The advantages of this technique are increasing the speed of fiber deposition (increasing productivity), facilitating jet initiation, maintaining spinning jet continuity, and directing of electrospinning jet …”
