Increased prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with alopecia areata: a systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: The AA subjects had lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, and vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent compared to non-AA controls. Hence, vitamin D deficiency should be assessed in AA patients. Furthermore, nutritional supplementation of vitamin D or topical vitamin D analogues can be considered for AA patients with vitamin D deficiency. The limitation of this study is the highly heterogeneity of the included studies.

“…Published data on AA suggest that vitamin D, due to its immunomodulatory effect, may be involved in AA [ 66 , 67 ]. Lee et al conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies on the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and/or serum vitamin D levels and AA [ 68 ]. These authors analyzed a total of 14 studies that involved 1255 patients with AA and 784 control patients without AA.…”

“…These results also suggest that vitamin D supplements or topical vitamin D analogues should be considered for patients with AA and vitamin D deficiency. However, the meta-analysis did not find any clear correlations between extent of hair loss and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level [ 68 ].…”

“…What is more, VDR knockout in mice prevents initiation of new hair cycles following morphogenesis . Evidence also suggests vitamin D deficiency is associated with female hair loss disorders and AA . Hair growth was shown to increase with the presence of synthetic vitamin D3 analogues (calcitriol/calcipotriol) in alopecia totalis, AA and in chemotherapy‐induced alopecia mouse models .…”

“…Vitamin D's immunosuppression function in skin helps avoiding auto‐attack and maintaining self‐tolerance by inhibiting the expression of certain inflammatory cytokines in Th1 and Th17 pathways 15 . While the vitamin D deficiency has been found in many other autoimmune diseases including psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, systemic and cutaneous lupus erythematosus, several studies were done to find out whether vitamin D deficiency exists in AA 16‐18 . Indian researchers reported AA patients have lower levels of vitamin D than healthy controls 19 and vitamin D deficiency correlates with disease severity 20,21 .…”
