Increased plasma pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations after myocardial infarction and the presence of depression during next 6-months.

Abstract: It can be assumed that more pronounced inflammatory response as an element of stress reaction after MI can predispose to depression. IL17a increase can play particularly important role in this process.

“…Several lines of evidence indicate that BD has a multifactorial etiology, comprising both genetic ( 5 , 6 ) and environmental factors ( 7 , 8 ). The concept of viewing mental disorders as the consequences of aberrant immune-inflammatory processes has recently become the subject of numerous studies ( 9 11 ). It appears that what is observed in the course of BD are both the activation of inflammatory processes within the central nervous system and systemic inflammatory reactions ( 12 , 13 ).…”

“… 50 However, increased plasma concentration of proinflammatory cytokines, especially IL-17a, after myocardial infarction plays an important role in the stress reaction that predisposes to depression during the next 6 months. 51 A recent study also demonstrated a higher rate of injection site reaction and allergy. 52 The exact roles of IL-17a and IL-17-neutralizing antibodies in this process remain to be elucidated, and comprehensive evaluation of these agents for clinical application will be needed.…”

“…Interleukin-6 is one of the factors that cause sickness behaviour -a behavioural syndrome that resembles depression, which is associated with decreased physical activity, psychomotor retardation, and cognitive impairment. Therefore, it can be assumed that an inflammatory reaction triggered by MI and myocardial necrosis, which occurred in 70% of the patients in the study of Wilkowska et al [34], is an important cause of depression. A similar mechanism may be associated with the occurrence of depression following CABG [35].…”

“…Wilkowska et al [34] demonstrated that MI leads to an increase in the concentration of plasma inflammatory cytokines that persists for several days, or longer, as in the case of interleukin-6. Interleukin-6 is one of the factors that cause sickness behaviour -a behavioural syndrome that resembles depression, which is associated with decreased physical activity, psychomotor retardation, and cognitive impairment.…”
