Increased plasma interleukin-8 concentrations in alcoholic hepatitis

Abstract: Patients with alcoholic hepatitis often have hepatic polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration and neutrophilia. Interleukin-8 is a cytokine that stimulates neutrophil chemotaxis and release of lysosomal enzymes. It is made by several types of cells, including fibroblasts, Kupffer cells and hepatocytes. In this study, serial plasma interleukin-8 concentrations were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 40 consecutive patients with moderate-to-severe alcoholic hepatitis over a 6-mo period. Two contr… Show more

“…10 In certain pathological situations, IL-8 is produced excessively by a wide variety of cells and it is released in the circulation. Previous studies showed that IL-8 secretion or IL-8 gene expression in chronic or acute liver diseases such as cirrhosis and autoimmune or alcoholic hepatitis, were increased compared with normal controls, [13][14][15][16][17] but without attempts at defining which components of liver injury may be most affected.…”

“…11,12 Previous studies have shown that IL-8 secretion or IL-8 gene expression in chronic or acute liver disease, such as cirrhosis and alcoholic or autoimmune hepatitis, were increased compared with normal control groups. [13][14][15][16][17] However, the role of hIRH as well as IL-8 in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related hepatitis remains unclear.…”

“…13,14 There is also increasing support for a role for chemokines in alcoholic liver injury. 15,16 Chemokines are a group of cytokines that exhibit strong chemoattractant activities and are involved in inflammatory cell migration. 17,18 To evaluate the relationship between pathological liver injury and activation of NF-B and cytokine disregulation, we used the rat intragastric feeding model for alcoholic liver disease.…”
