Increased occurrence of IgE+ and FcεRI+ cells in adenoids from atopic children

“…Moreover, stimulation resulted in a greater increase in the percentage of B cells in the cultures from atopic than from non-atopic children. These data support the concept that the immune reactivity of adenoid tissue differs between atopic and non-atopic individuals, and are in agreement with the findings in our previous studies on adenoids [6, 7, 12]. …”

“…We have previously reported an increase of IgE-containing cells in adenoids from atopic children [6]and an interleukin-4 (IL-4)-induced class switch to IgE production in adenoids [7]. Whether these findings indicate that the lymphatic tissue of adenoids is involved in IgE-mediated sensitisation due to local antigen stimulation or just mirror immune responses initiated in other parts of the immune system is not known.…”

“…Similarly, eosinophils, IL-4 and IL-5 mRNA-positive cells are increased in the adenoids of atopic children (2122). Furthermore, atopy is associated with increased numbers of IgE-positive cells in adenoids, irrespective of the presence of adenoid hypertrophy (2123). However, no correlation is observed between the atopic state and the degree of adenoid hypertrophy (2124).…”

“…Additionally, the fact that the more significant changes did not appear immediately after NPT (as usually takes place in the case of nasal mucosa) but on the second day may indicate that in adenoid pathologies the late phase of allergic reaction is vital. Also microscopic images showing adenoids of children affected by allergic rhinitis confirm this indirectly through the presence of eosinophil infiltration (histopathological examination) and increased activity of phagocytes and antigen-presenting cells (immunohistochemical study) [30][31][32][33][34][35]. The lack of correlation between the changes in NPT and analogical changes observed during pollination seems to disqualify this study as a tool for predicting the degree of adenoid reaction to a natural sensitising factor.…”
