Crimean–Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a severe form of haemorrhagic fever identified in parts of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. CCHF continues to be a justifiable cause of concern for people in rural areas where the disease is endemic. A total of 151 patients, diagnosed with CCHF, were evaluated retrospectively. The demographic characteristics of these patients and the relationship between the neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) at admission and survival were examined. There were 21 (13.9%) deaths. There was no relationship between age, gender and mortality, but elevated neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on admission was statistically associated with mortality. NLR is a laboratory marker that can be studied even in medical centres with limited facilities and may be helpful in predicting the clinical course of the disease.

Background Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral disease with a high mortality rate. Although CCHF has been widely investigated over the past decade, a review of the literature indicated no data on the prognostic capacity of the mean platelet volume-to-platelet count ratio (MPVPCR) and the red cell distribution width-to-platelet count ratio (RDWPCR) for the systemic inflammatory response in patients with CCHF. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic ability of MPVPCR and RDWPCR on mortality in patients with CCHF. Methods A total of 807 patients that were admitted to the Cumhuriyet University Hospital’s Emergency Department from January 2010 to December 2018 were involved. The RDWPCR and MPVPCR were separately calculated via absolute blood red cell and platelet counts at the time of admission. Before performing receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to define the optimum cut-off values of MPVPCR and RDWPCR stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to determine the predictive factors related to mortality in CCHF patients. Results Values of both MPVPCR and RDWPCR were significantly lower in survivors than in non-survivors (MPVPCR: 0.20±0.23 versus 0.55±0.55, P <0.001; RDWPCR: 0.27±0.32 versus 0.77±0.77, P <0.001, respectively). The MPVPCR (odds ratio [OR], 5.95; P =0.048) was an independent predictor for the prognosis of mortality in CCHF patients. The area under the curve in the ROC curve analysis for MPVPCR was 0.876 with a cut-off of 0.21 (sensitivity 87%, specificity 76%). Conclusion At the time of admission, MPVPCR might be a useful predictor of mortality in patients with CCHF.

Background: The mean platelet volume (MPV) is an important indicator of platelet function with large platelets showing higher enzymatic and metabolic activity than other platelets. There can be a relationship between increased platelet activity and anxiety and depression. Our primary hypothesis was that patients with high anxiety scores would have higher MPV, and the secondary hypothesis was that propofol induction time and total propofol consumption within the first 30 min of surgery would be higher in patients with higher anxiety scores. Methods: The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was administered to the participating patients 1 day before surgery to evaluate the level of anxiety. Based on the scores from the BAI, 40 patients with an anxiety score of < 8 were assigned to the non-anxious group (Group NA) and 40 patients with an anxiety score of ≥8 were assigned to the anxious group (Group A). At the anesthesia induction the mean time to achieve an entropy value below 60 (T1) was recorded. The total intraoperative propofol consumption within the first 30 min was recorded. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of preoperative MPV and demographic data, including age and sex. The mean total propofol consumption at 30 min after induction in the groups was statistically significant. The cutoff value for MPV was calculated as 9.65. Conclusions: The preoperative MPV values and propofol consumption at 30 min among patients with high preoperative anxiety scores were high. We suggest that MPV is helpful in the clinical practice in predicting the amount of anesthetic agents required for the 30 mins of anesthesia.
