Increased lipid peroxidation and lowered antioxidant defenses predict methamphetamine induced psychosis

Abstract: Background: A significant percentage of methamphetamine (MA) dependent patients develop psychosis. However, the associations between oxidative pathways and MA-induced psychosis (MIP) are not well delineated. Objective: The aim of this study is to delineate whether acute MA intoxication in MA dependent patients is accompanied by increased nitro-oxidative stress and whether the latter is associated with MIP. Method: We recruited 30 healthy males and 60 acutely intoxicated MA males with MA dependence and assessed… Show more

“…The severity of the Dependence Scale (SDS) was used to estimate the severity of MA dependence (41). As previously explained, we were able to extract one validated and replicable principal componenet (PC) from 4 SDS items, namely SDS1 (did you ever think your use of MA was out of control), SDS2 (did the prospect of missing MA make you very anxious or worried), SDS4 (did you wish you could stop) and SDS5 (how difficult would you find it to stop or go without MA) and labeled this construct "PC_SDS" (11). Age at onset, duration of MA dependence, daily dosage (gr), route of administration (no=0, orally ingested=1, smoked or snorted=2, and injected=3) were also recorded.…”
