Increased levels of the oxidative stress biomarker 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α in wastewater associated with tobacco use

Abstract: Wastewater analysis has been demonstrated to be a complementary approach for assessing the overall patterns of drug use by a population while the full potential of wastewater-based epidemiology has yet to be explored. F2-isoprostanes are a prototype wastewater biomarker to study the cumulative oxidative stress at a community level. In this work, 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α) was analysed in raw 24 h-composite wastewater samples collected from 4 Norwegian and 7 other European cities in 2014 and 2015. Us… Show more

“…The potential rapid degradation of EtS and EtG, especially EtG (Figures a and b), in the sewer system may limit their applicability as biomarkers for the estimation of alcohol consumption in the population, although both of them are still currently used in urinalysis to detect alcohol consumption in individuals . With a complete loss after only 2 hours in both RM and GS reactors, EtG is not recommended to be used to estimate alcohol consumption in WBE studies, which supports the practice in all WBE studies related to alcohol after the initial assessment of Reid et al (Table ). In general, as found in this and other studies, glucuronide compounds are very quickly transformed in wastewater, and hence are not suitable to be used as biomarkers in WBE.…”

“…Therefore, the uncertainty caused by in‐sewer stability of Cot and HCot is considered acceptable for WBE studies because it is equal or less than those from chemical analysis and both biomarkers can be used to estimate consumption of tobacco in the population. This finding supported the selection of many studies to use Cot and HCot as biomarkers for tobacco consumption …”

“…Initially, work was entirely focused upon illicit drug usage, including heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines (Boleda et al, 2007;Castiglioni et al, 2006;Kasprzyk-Hordern et al, 2008;Zuccato et al, 2008) but have since expanded to include a diverse range of other endogenous biomarkers, varying from ones linked to lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption (Boogaerts et al, 2016;Reid et al, 2011;Rodríguez-Álvarez et al, 2014a), tobacco (Castiglioni et al, 2015;Lai et al, 2017;Rodríguez-Álvarez et al, 2014b;Ben J. Tscharke et al, 2016) and psychoactive substances (Kinyua et al, 2015;Mardal and Meyer, 2014;Reid et al, 2014). Others have investigated general health through oxidative stress markers (Ryu et al, 2016(Ryu et al, , 2015.…”

“…Cityand country-wide studies have focused on monitoring licit 5,6 and illicit drugs [7][8][9] , including sports doping agents 10,11 , and have used these results to estimate public drug consumption 12 . Targeted applications have ranged from monitoring stress-related molecules 13 , plasticizers 3,14 , and pesticides 2 to metabolites associated with alcohol 15 and tobacco 16 ; general population biomarkers 17 ; and the environmental release of pharmaceuticals 18 . In addition to chemical identification, wastewater metabolomics can also be used to estimate population size 19,20 .…”
