Increased incidence of chalazion associated with face mask wear during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract: Purpose To determine whether the incidence of chalazion increased significantly in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County following the widespread adoption of face mask wear in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This is a retrospective multicenter study of two ophthalmology institutions: a private Oculoplastics practice in San Francisco and the Oculoplastics division of the Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. All patients… Show more

“…In a recent study, Boccardo [27] showed that while most people do not report a change in the ocular symptoms while wearing a facemask, a significant percentage of the persons having dry eye symptoms manifested exacerbated symptoms due to mask-wearing, a situation that can affect up to 18% of the general population. Silkiss et al [28] reported an increased incidence of chalazion in the San Francisco area between June-August 2020, when compared to the same interval in 2016-2019.…”

“…Other clues for the mask as a mitigator of breath-to-eye infections include SARS-CoV-2-associated conjunctivitis that is speculated to come from the breath via masks to the eye [ 51 , 52 , 53 ]. Additionally, a documented rise in the incidence of chalazion correlated to face-mask wearing compliance was reported by Silkiss et al [ 54 ]. In their retrospective multicenter study, all of the patients diagnosed with chalazion or hordeolum between January and August 2020 were identified.…”

“…Masks were taken off mostly during lunch and coffee breaks. Mean BCVA was 0.8 ± 0.16 (0.7-1) and mean IOP was 14.6 ± 4.8 (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)…”

“…However, anecdotal evidence, including observations in our daily practice suggest a higher prevalence of chalazion than usual. Silkiss et al reported an increased incidence of chalazion in a retrospective study and implicated increased air ow around the eye and the eyelids with the use of face masks [12]. Further studies are needed to assess the effect of long term surgical mask use on Meibomian gland functions.…”
