Increased human pressures on the alpine ecosystem along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway

Abstract: Construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway (QTR) increased the links between inland China and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). The QTR accelerated surrounding tourism, boosted the local economy, and led to rapid development of livestock raising. To assess how distance from the railway and different regions have influenced the impact of the QTR on the alpine ecosystem, human footprint maps were produced to indicate human pressures, and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), an index of vegetation gree… Show more

“…In addition, the spatial extent of the human pressure on ecosystems has been widespread (Li, Zhang, Wang, & Li, 2018). For example, the construction and operation of the Qinghai‐Tibet Railway have had an impact on vegetation within a distance of 30 km (Luo et al, 2020); grazing is accompanied by widespread movement across the entire pasture, and grazing pressure was at a high level on the southeastern Changtang Plateau, the Three‐River Headwaters region (Huang et al, 2016), consistent with the distribution of browning in our study.…”

“…This is also a significant factor affecting the health of forest ecosystems [ 42 ]. Simultaneously, artificial surfaces and farmland can reduce the stability of the surrounding ecosystems [ 43 ], change geological and hydrological conditions, increase the probability of natural disasters [ 44 , 45 ], which threaten the forest ecosystems that are close to artificial surfaces.…”

“…Projects for the recovery and promotion of railway heritage from a tourism point of view could help develop the community, with mutual benefits for both the individual and the community [51,81,[92][93][94][95]. The "Adopt a Station" project in Scotland was an example of how community engagement in joining this program is representative of a sustainable social approach over time, as citizens do not feel the weight of volunteering as an obligation but as a chance to feel useful for the community [50,75].…”
