Increased BOLD Signals Elicited by High Gamma Auditory Stimulation of the Left Auditory Cortex in Acute State Schizophrenia

Abstract: Recent MRI studies have shown that schizophrenia is characterized by reductions in brain gray matter, which progress in the acute state of the disease. Cortical circuitry abnormalities in gamma oscillations, such as deficits in the auditory steady state response (ASSR) to gamma frequency (> 30-Hz) stimulation, have also been reported in schizophrenia patients. In the current study, we investigated neural responses during click stimulation by BOLD signals. We acquired BOLD responses elicited by click trains of 2… Show more

“…According to Figures and Table , our results on spatial source phase showed higher variance in the AL of SZs than HCs. This finding is supported by the results of structural MRI data from Pearlson et al () showing differences between SZs and HCs in left anterior and left posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG), and may be due to higher activation in the left hemisphere in schizophrenia (Agcaoglu et al, ; Kuga et al, ).…”

“…The methods were based on a previous study [16]. In the informed consent process, we explained to all participants that the tasks included the presentation of images, but we did not describe the content of the images.…”

“…Induced 40-Hz γ power in the left hemisphere was correlated with AHs in schizophrenia ( Hirano et al, 2015 ). In another, 80-Hz ASSR-BOLD (blood oxygen–level dependent) signal was positively associated with AHs in acute episode schizophrenia ( Kuga et al, 2016 ). Interestingly, when 40-Hz ASSR was divided as early-latency and late-latency γ response, researchers did not find group differences of early or late γ activity signatures between SZ-AH and SZ-non-AH ( Griskova-Bulanova et al, 2016 ).…”
