Increased beef production from Townsville lucerne (Stylosanthes sundaica Taub.) in the spear grass pastures of central coastal Queensland

Abstract: The performance of Townsville lucerne (Stylosanthes sundaica Taub.) as a legume for inclusion in native pastures dominated by spear grass (Heteropogon contortus (L.) Beauu. ex R. & S.) has been studied near Gladstone, in central coastal Queensland. A pasture mixture of Townsviille lucerne and spear grass, given 10.5 cwt 73 superphosphate, 1.5 cwt potassium chloride, and 5 oz sodium molybdate an acre, over a six-year period: produced five times as much Live-weight gain per acre as untreated native pasture. … Show more

“…This sounds small when compared with the five-and six-fold increases reported by Shaw (1961) and Shaw and 't Mantje (1970) to have resulted from seeding spear grass native pasture at Rodd's Bay, Queensland, with Townsville stylo and applying superphosphate. However, the productivity of the native grazing in their trials was very low (16 to 38 kg bodymass gain/ha/year) and the actual level of production of the Townsville stylo reinforced grazing was less than that of LRV in the present trial.…”

“…The superiority of S. humilis in relative growth over the other species when grown in the Samford soil with low phosphate supply (= 2-4 cwt superphosphate per acre) agrees with its reputed field superiority over other species in this regard (Anon. 1959;Norman and Arndt 1959;Shaw 1961;Graham 1964;Humphries 1967).…”

“…However, no reports can be cited in which responses were obtained to the supplementation of grazing animals with naturally occurring browse. In future work on supplementation with browse, it would be of value to make comparisons with alternative protein sources, such as protein concentrates (Harris et al, , 1967;Shaw, 1961).…”
