Increase of peripheral T regulatory cells during remission induction with cyclophosphamide in active systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: Cyclophosphamide pulse therapy was associated with a significant increase of the CD4(+) CD25(high) FOXP3(+) Tregs in patients with active LN and NPSLE. This effect is probably indirect and may partially explain the beneficial role of cyclophosphamide in such cases.

“…The present study supports the results of prior studies regarding improvement in the levels of circulating Treg cells following disease remission . This improvement in Treg frequency was seen as early as 3 months in the responder group, even though it showed a mild non‐significant decline after 3 months.…”

“…Foxp3 + Tregs, in a cohort of lupus nephritis patients, showed a decrease in the inflammatory infiltrate of lupus nephritis, particularly during the most active phases of lupus nephritis . Peripheral Tregs are significantly increased during remission induction with cyclophosphamide in lupus nephritis . In mice, treatment of lupus nephritis by piperlongumine alleviates lupus nephritis by suppressing the frequency of Th17 cells and increasing the proportion of Tregs .…”

“…К. Tselios и соавт. [22] выявили значительное увеличение количества Т-рег-клеток у больных с волчаночным нефритом после четырех пульсовых введений циклофосфана (ЦФ), что коррелировало со снижением активности нефрита и уровнем протеинурии. Однако в этом исследовании не изучено количество Т-регклеток до начала иммуносупрессивной терапии.…”
