Increase of novel biomarkers for oxidative stress in patients with plasma cell disorders and in multiple myeloma patients with bone lesions

Abstract: MM is closely associated with oxidative stress and further investigation might provide an insight to understand a putative causal link between oxidative stress and MM disease onset and progression or MM complications.

“…An 8-OHdG provides a useful indicator and reliable approach for the assessment of oxidative DNA damage in vivo. Elevated oxidative DNA damage in patients with MM cancer may be associated with previous studies, which have indicated the decrease in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant system as well as increase in free radicals or reactive metabolites in MM patients (24)(25)(26)(27). Nitrite and nitrate are both eventual fates of nitric oxide (NO) oxidation, known as end-products of endogenous NO metabolism.…”

“…In a previous study, the authors analyzed the serum levels of AOPPs, AGEs and protein nitrosylation in order to quantify the oxidative stress in untreated MM patients and in patients affected by monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance [22]. The authors showed that serum levels of AOPPs and S-nitrosylated proteins were significantly increased in MM patients compared with controls and to monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance patients.…”

“…In particular, they seem to be implicated as second messengers for the activation of activator protein-1 and NF-κB via TNF and IL-1 [22]. As several studies have documented, tumor cells from blood neoplasms and also colon, breast and pancreatic cancers activated expression of NF-κB [2, [22][23][24].…”

“…SOD catalyzes superoxide to less toxic compounds, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) helps in the recycling of reduced glutathione (GSH) that serves as a substrate in reactions in which electrophilic compounds, oxidants, and xenobiotics are detoxified [14]. Previous reports have already found their association with the pathogenesis of MM [15].…”
