Increase of capacity on the shinkansen high-speed line using virtual coupling

Abstract: The coupling and decoupling of trains while they are in motion is one of the research fields of the DLR project, Next Generation Train. The coupling will be non-mechanical, but virtual and will be maintained by means of distance control technology. A special challenge of the virtual coupling in railway operation is the peril point of the switch in case of failure during the passage of two trains which are coming from different tracks, running in close succession at high speed. Therefore some concepts are unrea… Show more

“…The Shift2Rail aims to double the railway capacity in the future and virtual coupling technology is expected to prove an effective way to realise that goal [3]. A lot of research has explored towards the virtual coupling [4][5][6][7]. The capacity improvement under virtual coupling control strategy was assessed and demonstrated by an application in the UK [8].…”

“…Additional customers bring higher revenue and build a good reputation (DB, 2017, Renfe, 2015. HSR operators pay specific attention to punctuality and reliability and some operators promote their HSR service -such as the Japanese Shinkansen-as a system that stands for a punctual and reliable transport mode (Schumann, 2017). JRCentral ( 2018) states that computer-aided traffic control, which integrates data and information from different sources, reporting on trains and facilities utilization's status can support a reliable and punctual system.…”
