Incorporation of Temperature and Plastic Strain Effects into Local Approach to Fracture

Abstract: An unjustified simplification of the local quantitative criterion regarding cleavage nucleation is a key problem in the utilisation of the Local Approach to Fracture (LA), particularly to predict the fracture toughness within the ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT) region. The theoretical concept of the effect of both temperature and the plastic strain value on the crack nuclei (CN) generation rate in iron and ferritic steels is presented. It is shown how the plastic strain and temperature affect CN formation … Show more

“…5). Specific feature of brittle fracture of bcc metals and alloys is that it is initiated by those CNs that become unstable at the moment of their formation [11,12]. This is one of the reasons why the energy consumption for failure of the crystal lattice at the tip of such submicroscopic CN is insignificant and comparable with the surface energy of metal.…”

“…This dependence takes into account the fact that the sides of a shear crack are pressed against each other by a force of 2 9) for the area of local yield region and, accordingly, relation (12) for the increase in the average temperature in this region, are obtained in the approximation of an ideally plastic material. It means that the effect of strain hardening isn't taken into account.…”

“…Kotrechko et.al. [24] present the theoretical concept of the effect of the plastic strain value on the crack nuclei generation rate in iron and ferritic steels. It is shown how the plastic strain and temperature affect CN formation rate and, govern the shape of the temperature dependence of fracture toughness and its scatter limits consequently.…”

“…The final stage of failure development of bodies, which is the subject of fracture mechanics investigation, is crack propagation (unstable or stable). Attention is paid to understanding this behaviour of structural materials to the deterministic approaches and to the computational modelling of such processes for the case of several representative types of composites, unlike various types of probabilistic considerations by [4][5][6][7], or discrete element techniques by [8,9], or even those relying on techniques of artificial intelligence as [10]. This article used the long-time experience of both authors in this research field, which is confronted with new models, methods and results developed in recent years.…”
