Incorporation of Ni(II)-dimethylglyoxime ion-imprinted polymer into electrospun polysulphone nanofibre for the determination of Ni(II) ions from aqueous samples

Abstract: Ni(II)-dimethylglyoxime ion-imprinted polymer (Ni(II)-DMG IIP) was encapsulated in polysulphone and electrospun into nanofibres with diameters ranging from 406 to 854 nm. The structures of the Ni(II)-DMG encapsulated-IIP nanofibre, non-imprinted encapsulated-polymer nanofibre and polysulphone nanofibre mats were observed by scanning electron microscopy and evaluated by infrared spectroscopy. Electrospinning increased the specific surface area of the Ni(II)-DMG encapsulated-IIP nanofibre mats, as was evidenced … Show more

“…The absorption band at 1728 cm -1 was assigned to the carbonyl group of TMSPMA. A comparison of the K 2 Cr 2 O 7 and IIPs spectra showed no K 2 Cr 2 O 7 index peak, confirming the complete extraction of the Cr (VI) anion from the IIPs structure [63].…”

“…An example of the use of this method is cited in the research carried out by Rammika et al (2011), where IIPs particles obtained through precipitation and mini-emulsion polymerization approaches were suspended with 10 m dimethyl formamide (DMF) and 200 mg polysulphone (PSU), and the solution was stirred for three hours. The resulting solution is further electrospinning at a high voltage of 15 kV.…”

“…Because of the highly crosslinked polymers, IIPs are durable and can be reused without loss of activity and as classical chelating resins, they can be stored and used in solvent, pH, temperature and pressure conditions that natural systems would not tolerate. 47,55 Hg-IIP Preparation Approaches Rao et al classified the synthesis of metal ion-imprinted polymers into the four approaches based on the inclusion of ligands in the polymer matrix: (i) chemical immobilization by preparation of binary complexes of metal ions with ligands having vinyl groups, isolation and then polymerization with matrix-forming monomers; (ii) trapping of non-vinylated chelating ligand via imprinting of binary/ternary mixed ligand complexes of metal ions with a nonvinylated chelating agent and vinyl ligand; (iii) surface imprinting on the aqueous-organic interface; (iv) linear chain polymers carrying metal-binding groups cross-linked with a bifunctional reagent. 48 Branger et al 50 provided an elegant schematic of Hg-IIP preparation (Fig.…”

“…They are not easily degradable (Chopra, Pathak, & Prasad, 2009), thus, their tendency to accumulate in the environment, and eventually end up in the human food chain. Although the human body needs some of these metal ions in trace quantities, their existence in high concentrations can result in serious human ailments (Rammika, Darko, & Torto, 2011). Henceforth, it is essential that the concentration of heavy metal ions in recycled wastewater be considerably reduced to acceptable levels as set out by international monitoring agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) (Javed & Usmani, 2013), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (Elnabris, Muzyed, & El-Ashgar, 2013) and Environment Protection Agency standard (EPA) (Barakat, 2011).…”
