Incorporation of inherent safety principles in process safety management

Abstract: Process safety management (PSM) deals with the identification, understanding, and control of process hazards to prevent process-related injuries and incidents. Explicit incorporation of the principles of inherent safety in the basic definition and functional operation of the various PSM elements can help to improve the quality of the safety management effort.Numerous inherent safety examples, both technical and nontechnical, are given in this paper. Existing qualitative and quantitative tools that already incl… Show more

“…16 Thus, within element 6, process risk management, the hierarchical arrangement of dust explosion prevention and mitigation measures shown in Table 5 would find direct application. Additionally, within element 8, training and performance, a strong safety culture would necessitate the provision of workplace training in dust explosion hazards, and how these hazards can be alleviated by application of, for example, the inherent safety principle of minimization through effective housekeeping.…”

“…Based on the experience of the authors, it is critically important to place technical knowledge in a context of demonstrable management commitment to dust explosion risk reduction. 4,[14][15][16] DUST EXPLOSION CAUSATION As a first step to understanding dust explosion causation, it is important to distinguish between a dust explosion hazard and a dust explosion risk. While the terms hazard and risk are often used interchangeably, they represent very different concepts.…”

“…and the options are not only for inherent strategies but also for covering passive, active and procedural safety measures. There are also inherent safety-based checklists developed for incident based investigation and process safety management [21,22]. Another potential method is by using inherent safety indices.…”
