Incorporation of Coumarin-Based Fluorescent Monomers into Co-Oligomeric Molecules

Abstract: With the purpose of modifying organic fluorescent dyes based on the coumarin scaffold, and developing and evaluating a route to its incorporation into a polymeric backbone, a study was conducted on the co-polymerization of 3-vinylcoumarins with styrene and methyl acrylate using 2,2-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as the radical initiator. The structural and photophysical characterization proved the incorporation of the coumarin monomers into the polymeric chain and further showed a decrease in the fluorescence… Show more

“…Due to the tunable fluorescence and absorbance properties [101] coumarin molecules are incorporated in numerous application fields such as OLEDs [31][32][33][34], optical data storages [35,36], or laser dyes [37,38]. Trenor et al and Wagner et al published detailed reviews of coumarin moieties and their photophysical properties some years ago [29,102].…”

“…The anchored coumarin showed similar luminescence compared to the molecular one despite the large spacer [106]. In another approach, Teixeira et al reported on the copolymerization of 3-vinylcoumarins and 7-hydroxy-3-vinylcoumarin with styrene and methyl acrylates and the resulting spectroscopic changes [34]. They discovered a bathochromic shift of the UV absorption maximum of 3-vinylcoumarin compared to 7-hydroxycoumarin due to the extension of the conjugated system.…”

“…Beyond 2004, many new developments in polymer technology, where coumarin plays a key role to achieve new functions and performance, have emerged. The photophysical properties of new coumarin-derived molecules continue to be used as active dyes in new polymer structures [74]. For example, some very recent reported scientific works deal with analysing the molecular level interaction of coumarin dopant as a foreign molecule at different concentrations within two different polymer matrices [poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl alcohol)] [75].…”
