Abstract:The main objective of this study was to identify the most vulnerable areas to soil erosion in the Lake Tana Basin, Blue Nile, Ethiopia using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a physically based distributed hydrological model, and a Geographic Information System based decision support system that uses multi-criteria evaluation (MCE). The SWAT model was used to estimate the sediment yield within each sub-basin and identify the most sediment contributing areas in the basin. Using the MCE analysis, an attempt was made to combine a set of factors (land use, soil, slope and river layers) to make a decision according to the stated objective. On the basis of simulated SWAT, sediment yields greater than 30 tons/ha for each of the sub-basin area, 18Ð4% of the watershed was determined to be high erosion potential area. The MCE results indicated that 12-30Ð5% of the watershed is high erosion potential area. Both approaches show comparable watershed area with high soil erosion susceptibility. The output of this research can aid policy and decision makers in determining the soil erosion 'hot spots' and the relevant soil and water conservation measures.

Multiple Criteria Evaluation (MCE) is often used with GIS to identify suitable sites for multi-purpose development such as ecotourism. Typically, expert or stakeholder consultation is used to identify weights reflecting the relative importance of map layers representing different criteria. The objective of this study was to evaluate a new consultative approach to GIS-based MCE, using ecotourism development in Kurdistan, Iraq, as a case study. In an initial and follow-up consultation, stakeholders were asked not only to assess the relative importance of different map layers for ecotourism development, but also to identify specific sites suitable for ecotourism. Seventy-eight ecotourism destinations nominated by participants had significantly higher MCE scores than a set of 58 locations chosen without reference to stakeholders (t-test=21.16; p<0.001). The approach thus provides a straightforward means of assessing the consistency of stakeholder input into MCE and could be adapted for use in other site suitability assessments.

The study attempted to map soil-erosion critical zones in the Guder sub-basin in Ethiopia. To map soil erosion sensitive areas, a digital elevation model (12 m × 12 m spatial resolution), precipitation data covering 30 years, soil type, and land use were utilized as inputs. Fuzzy logic techniques based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were integrated and analyzed on the ArcGIS 10.5 platform. Five contributing variables were considered as potential causes associated to soil-erosion in the study. Slope, land use, soil type, rainfall, and compound topographic index are the variables. Fuzzy membership values were constructed to generate the rankings of each parameter and their subclasses. Researcher and expert judgment with a survey of the previous studies were used to determine the membership value for each thematic layer and their classes. As a result, the soil-erosion zone map revealed very high, high, moderate, low, and very low erosion susceptibility with areal percentage distribution of 4.96%, 67.48%, 25.41%, 1.88%, and 0.27%, respectively. The study's findings were validated using cross-relationship of the contributing elements and the final map, which revealed strong relationships. The study's findings would help decision-makers and policymakers plan and implement effective watershed management strategies in highly vulnerable locations to soil erosion. Fuzzy logic approaches, when combined with GIS, have been proven to be a basic tool for determining erosion important locations. The final soil erosion map revealed that the majority of the studied areas were prone to soil erosion as a result of agricultural practices, necessitating integrated soil and water conservation practices.
