Incorporating flexibility options into distribution grid reinforcement planning: A techno-economic framework approach

Abstract: Distributed energy resources (DER) and new types of consumer equipment create many challenges for the distribution system operators (DSOs). Power congestions that can potentially be created during normal or contingency situations will lead to increased investments into grid reinforcement. An alternative solution is to use the flexibility provided by the local resources in the grid. In this paper value of flexibility (VoF) is used as an indicator that can be utilized by the DSO to compare it against costs of th… Show more

“…In particular, they stress the necessity to define new services that are specifically designed for DSO needs, like voltage control, loss minimization, phase balancing, load reduction during planned maintenance, and contribution to the extension of asset life time. In [25] the authors present a framework to incorporate such options in the planning procedures of DSOs.…”

“…A more radical solution is to reinforce the grid. It is the task of the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to face this challenge and weigh up the cost for flexibility and grid reinforcement [5]. The study [6] investigated the impact of renewable energy sources in the European distribution grid by 2050.…”
