Incorporating demand uncertainty and forecast error in supply chain planning models

Abstract: This paper develops a framework for examining the effect of demand uncertainty and forecast error on unit costs and customer service levels in the supply chain, including Material Requirements Planning (MRP) type manufacturing systems. The aim is to overcome the methodological limitations and confusion that has arisen in much earlier research. To illustrate the issues, the problem of estimating the value of improving forecasting accuracy for a manufacturer was simulated. The topic is of practical importance be… Show more

“…They observe that many studies are dominated by a research paradigm that emphasizes mathematics, and they think that information sharing in the supply chain is valuable. They conclude with the observation that "more empirical modeling that includes forecast error and less reliance on spurious mathematical simplicity is required" (Fildes & Kingsman, 2011).…”

“…A summary of time series forecasting techniques and models are presented by Jan G. De Gooijer [9]. A comprehensive review of research in forecasting for supply chains is given by Fildes and Kingsman [5], who conclude that there are [3,20] and other life cycle assessment models of the product to forecast the demand. Although this is one of the best method but requires correct data of similar technology to find the constants involve in calculations.…”

“…Existe material referencial que aborda este tipo de enfoque (Gaur, Kesavan, Raman y Fisher, 2007;Fildes y Kingsman, 2011;Chase, 2014), pero hay diferencias en la práctica local de aspectos vitales debido a que en el mercado retail peruano existe un uso limitado de técnicas cuantitativas para estimar la demanda y establecer una periodicidad adecuada de abastecimiento.…”
