Incorporating Clinical Imaging into the Delivery of Microbeam Radiation Therapy

Abstract: Synchrotron microbeam radiation therapy is a promising pre-clinical radiation treatment modality; however, it comes with many technical challenges. This study describes the image guidance protocol used for Australia’s first long-term pre-clinical MRT treatment of rats bearing 9L gliosarcoma tumours. The protocol utilises existing infrastructure available at the Australian Synchrotron and the adjoining Monash Biomedical Imaging facility. The protocol is designed and optimised to treat small animals utilising hi… Show more

“…Measurement uncertainties (as described in Section 2.4.1) are shown for each axis; the three errors are combined in quadrature to give the total uncertainty in the 3D measurement. al., 2020; Paino et al, 2021). In each study, the image guidance provided by SyncMRT allowed for the accurate alignment of tumours to the synchrotron beam.…”

“…Although SyncMRT has been used in several experiments over the past four years, only one study (Paino et al, 2021) has presented and collected results for a QA protocol similar to those described in this paper. As such, there are no existing studies, published or unpublished, that we can draw data from.…”
