Incomplete Urethral Duplication Associated with a Dermoid Cyst in a Dog with Urinary Obstruction

Abstract: A 20-month-old male miniature dachshund was evaluated for a 10-week history of intermittent stranguria, pollakiuria, haematuria and obstructive urolithiasis. Retrograde urethrocystography revealed a subcutaneous saccular structure in the perineal area connected to the intrapelvic urethra associated with urolithiasis. After excision of the perineal saccular structure, microscopical examination confirmed the presence of transitional epithelium lining the diverticulum, with isolated submucosal smooth muscle bundl… Show more

“…Unlike previous reports of urethral duplication in dogs, the clinical history and medical record provided with this case did not indicate the presence of any previous urogenital abnormalities. Recurrent urinary tract infections have been previously reported with urethral duplication in a dog [3]. There were numerous lymphoid nodules lining the urothelium of the mass, suggesting chronic or recurrent antigenic stimulation, which may have been due to previous low-grade urinary tract infections from intermittent urine retention.…”

“…Dermoid cysts often occur along the midline, but may be observed in any anatomic location. The association of a dermoid cyst with a duplicated urethra has been described previously in veterinary medicine [3]. The significance of a dermoid cyst associated with a duplicated urethra is unknown in veterinary medicine.…”

“…Multiple enteric duplication cysts were recently reported in a human infant (Udiya et al 2016). To the best of our knowledge, only single lesions have been reported in the dog, in the foregut and in the urinary tract (Oui et al 2014;Walling and Arndt 2015;Jack et al 2016;Mutascio et al 2017;Thierry et al 2017).…”
