Income convergence across the U.S. states: further evidence from new recent data

Abstract: Noting the analytical and empirical significance of the topic, this research revisits the theme of income convergence across the US states. The work fills several gaps in the existing literature by (a) covering the most recent period 1997-2018, (b) using the official data on real GDP per capita compiled by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), (c) explicitly comparing the convergence scenario for 1997-2018 with that for 1977-1997, and (d) placing the observed patterns in the context of Piketty-like proposi… Show more

“…Convergence is a complex process with, in some circumstances, bidirectional characteristics [35]. These processes are challenging worldwide [36], but they pose particular difficulties in African countries [37]. Often, the different countries converge at distinct speeds and follow diverse patterns, creating clubs of convergence [38], dependent on several factors [39].…”

“…b convergence is derived from neoclassical growth theory, including absolute b and conditional b convergence (Liu and Du, 2017;Bigerna et al, 2021;Ram, 2021;Shi et al, 2022). Absolute b convergence refers to a gradual convergence to the same state of environmental regulation efficiency across cities over time, without considering external factors.…”
