Purpose This paper aims to examine the convergence in per-capita income (measured as per-capita net state domestic product) of regions in India during the period 1990–1991 to 2017–2018. Two separate analyses have also been done for the sub-periods, i.e., 1990–1991 to 2003–2004 and 2004–2005 to 2017–2018, to find out the effect of the second phase of economic liberalization in India. Design/methodology/approach In a panel data study, the estimation of absolute and conditional beta (β)-convergence and sigma (σ)-convergence across 17 Indian regions have been done. To measure the dispersion of per-capita income across the regions in India, the standard deviation of logs, Gini coefficient, Mehran measure, Piesch measure, Kakwani measure and Theil index have been estimated. In addition to this, these indices have been regressed over time. Findings This study finds the presence of absolute and conditional β-convergence; the regions with low initial per-capita income have grown faster than the regions with high initial per-capita income. Further, this study finds that foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow and the availability of power enhance growth across regions. However, this study finds the presence of σ-divergence, which indicates that the economic inequality among the regions in India has widened over the periods, calling for policy interventions to promote growth in the backward regions through the promotion of FDI inflow and the availability of power. Originality/value This study highlights the rising economic inequality among the regions in India by analyzing the latest available data through appropriate econometric techniques.

Governments and international organizations have implemented efforts to promote the convergence of socioeconomic indicators between countries. The structural funds adopted by the European Union institutions are examples of policy instruments implemented to promote convergence in the GDP (gross domestic product) among the member states. Nonetheless, these policy measures are dependent on several internal and external factors, making these efforts vulnerable to exogenous shocks such as those associated with the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. From this perspective, this research aims to analyze the convergence trends over the last few years and assess the respective implications of the pandemic on this framework. For that, statistical information from the World Bank for the GDP per capita was considered for the period 2006–2021 for all countries and organized for each group of levels of income and each world region. These data were analyzed through panel data approaches, considering the developments in convergence theory. The results show that the signs of convergence are different for each level of income and each region, highlighting the idea of clubs of convergence. On the other hand, the pandemic disturbed the trends of convergence verified worldwide, but nonetheless, it seems to be on a smaller scale than the global financial crisis. In any case, these findings should be confirmed in future research with more recent data.

Environmental regulation efficiency facilitates environmental governance performance assessment, ecological protection, and high-quality development. Herein, based on the panel data of 75 cities in the Yellow River Basin from 2007 to 2020, this paper constructed an evaluation index system and measured the environmental regulation efficiency using a super-EBM hybrid distance model. We analyzed the regional differences and dynamic evolution characteristics of environmental regulation efficiency with the help of Dagum’s Gini coefficient decomposition and kernel density estimation methods. Furthermore, a spatial econometric model explored the spatio-temporal convergence of environmental regulation efficiency. The main findings show that the environmental regulation efficiency of the overall Yellow River Basin and the upper, middle, and lower reaches showed an increasing trend with significant within-region spatial differences. The differences between all regions had a narrowing trend. The primary source of spatial differences in environmental regulation efficiency was the intensity of transvariation. The dynamic evolution characteristics of environmental regulation efficiency in different regions were quite different, and the spatial polarization phenomenon was more evident in the upper reaches. Except for the overall Yellow River Basin, all regions existed σ convergence. The results of spatial convergence estimation indicated absolute and conditional β convergence in all regions. The findings provide a factual reference for policies related to establishing policy systems for environmental regulation efficiency and green coordinated development in similar regions of the world.
