InCoB2014: mining biological data from genomics for transforming industry and health

Abstract: The 13th International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB2014) was held for the first time in Australia, at Sydney, July 31-2 August, 2014. InCoB is the annual scientific gathering of the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet), hosted since 2002 in the Asia-Pacific region. Of 106 full papers submitted to the BMC track of InCoB2014, 50 (47.2%) were accepted in BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Genomics and BMC Systems Biology supplements, with three papers in a new BMC Medical Genomics supplement. While the majo… Show more

“…Authors were offered the BMC track (supplement issues of BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Systems Biology or BMC Genomics) and PeerJ [ 3 ]. The details of acceptance rates and the reviewing process are available from our BMC Genomics overview [ 4 ]. Eleven articles with a "systems" theme briefly described in the following sections.…”

“…InCoB2014 provided authors the choice of submitting original research as full manuscripts to either the BMC track (supplement issues of BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Systems Biology or BMC Genomics) or to a special issue of PeerJ. The statistics for paper submission and acceptance, along with details of the peer review process undertaken as well as the links to the BMC Systems Biology, BMC Medical Genomics and PeerJ supplements are provided in the InCoB2014 BMC Genomics supplement introduction [ 2 ], with 16 “bioinformatics” articles briefly overviewed here.…”

“…A very recent career feature co-authored by Christian describes seven ‘Grand Challenges in bioinformatics education and training’ ( Işık et al 2023 ), which Christian helped identify and make progress toward in his leadership roles in the APBioNet and the ISCB. Christian organized conferences, including APBioNet’s annual meeting, the International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB) since 2010, the first GOBLET meeting ( Attwood et al 2015 ), representing APBioNet, and the ICoVax 2012 workshop ( He et al 2013 ), taking a leading role in publishing InCoB proceedings as journal supplements ( Schönbach et al 2012 , 2014 , 2015 , 2016 ), sometimes as joint conferences, such as the 1st ISCB Asia conference in 2011 ( Ranganathan et al 2011 ) and with the Genome Informatics Workshop ( Schönbach et al 2015 ). With these conferences, Christian built bridges not only between sub-disciplines but also between cultures and generations of scientists.…”
