Abstract:This paper reports on a systematic review into inclusivity and diversity in the higher education marketing discipline. Thirty-one studies met the inclusion criteria and are analyzed to identify the inclusion and diversity identities that have been studied, synthesize strategies that have been identified as successful in supporting inclusion and diversity in the classroom and propose a future research agenda to further scholarly understanding within the marketing discipline. The findings suggest that most prior… Show more
“…A higher learning institution benefits if it has policies on diversity and inclusion because diversity promotes new perspectives through having a wide range of people with different expertise, views, backgrounds and experiences (Davis, 2022). Diversity and inclusion are contemporary issues in the higher education system when it comes to the actual teaching and learning process including the staffing processes (Riedel et al, 2023). When it comes to the actual teaching diversity is an issue because this means presenting concepts in different modes whilst encouraging a culture of reflection and thoughtful discussions.…”
Purpose: Teachers, students, and the administration of higher education institutions face a variety of opportunities and challenges as a result of diversity and inclusion. This study looks at diversity and inclusion as a current concern in postsecondary education from the perspectives of instructors, students, and institutional administration. It aims to offer suggestions for dealing with these problems in universities. Higher education institutions are independent and not subject to government oversight in the same manner as public sector organizations, despite receiving significant public funding. The governance, management, and autonomous status of higher education institutions are other topics covered in this work.
Methodology: This review draws from inclusion theory which has transformed the view on diversity management from preventing discrimination, which suits the moral view on equality as procedural or individual justice, to ensuring inclusion, which fits the moral view on equality as recognition of diversity. The information is based on literature from various sources.
Findings: This study highlights that diversity and inclusion creates a better workplace for everyone while creating an inclusive learning environment. Good governance assures the quality of decision-making hence promotes effective delivery of educational services in a higher learning institution.
Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: This review article discusses various initiatives, strategies and challenges on diversity and inclusion in higher education as a contemporary issue. The paper also discusses the differences in management and governance as applied in higher education.

“…While the dominant neoliberal discourse in higher education has to date prioritized business model approaches, productivity and efficiency, and priorities of the majority, it is clear that in the highly competitive current postsecondary market, equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) have begun to be seen no longer as concerns of a marginalized minority, but as major branding features for institutions that increasingly have to position themselves attractively to a broad range of learners (Wolbring & Nguyen, 2023). In this sense, EDI has become a focus, not just in terms of social justice and fair governance, but more importantly in relation to economic growth, sustainable development, and market share (Riedel et al, 2023). This means that the search for best practices in terms of inclusion for diverse leaners is no longer perceived as just a pedagogical priority for instructors; it is now a market priority for senior administration.…”

Recent profound societal transformations have led to a broad reframing of the collective understanding and use of the term ‘diversity’. In the tertiary sector, in particular, this widening and deepening of the reflection on learner diversity has meant a move away from a simple focus on impairment; this term now also encompasses all intersectional dimensions of culture, race, Indigeneity, socioeconomics, gender and sexual orientation, and age. The tertiary sector is urgently seeking tools to embed this emerging lens into teaching and learning practices. The online facets of post-secondary teaching have lagged behind in this reflection, and the COVID pandemic pivot has highlighted how challenging management of change could be in online pedagogy. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has offered powerful promises in supplying instructors with hands-on resources to navigate this rapid transformation of online pedagogy and guarantee that online learning spaces are fully inclusive. This paper explores and analyzes auto-ethnographic data collected by the author along the last four years, while he provided support and professional development around UDL as a consultant through the sector. The paper presents key findings from this analysis in relation to the usefulness of UDL in the diverse online class, and invites a reflection related to their strategic implications for higher education.
