Inclusion of higher modes in the analysis of non‐classically damped systems

Abstract: SUMMARYA time-integration procedure for dynamic analysis of non-classically damped systems, in which high-frequency modes play a significant role, is suggested. This procedure is an extension of Clough and Mojtahedi's' method. Clough and Mojtahedi suggested integration of the transformed coupled equations of motion where the transformation is done using a truncated set of undamped mode-shapes. The proposed extension consists in adding the response of all the higher modes through a quasistatic analysis. Approxi… Show more

“…Four versions of mode-superposition method are available in the literature: (i) the traditional mode-displacement method (MDM); (ii) the mode-acceleration method [1][2][3][4][5] (MAM); (iii) the dynamic correction method [6] (DCM); and (iv) the force derivative method [7; 8] (FDM).…”

“…In the MAM [1][2][3][4][5] the approximate modal contribution to the response of the neglected modes is evaluated in a pseudo-static form observing that the contribution to nodal response of both velocity and acceleration terms can be neglected for high frequencies.…”

“…Modal acceleration methods (Maddox, 1975;Hansteen and Bell, 1979;Leger and Wilson, 1988;Kulkarni and Ng, 1992;Dickens et al, 1997) consider the contribution of higher (unavailable) modes by a pseudo-static term, which takes into account a particular solution of the equation of motion (the particular solution is calculated by setting the excitation frequency to zero). The mode acceleration method neglects the contribution of both velocity and acceleration terms to responses and it is therefore considered as a static approximation method.…”
